Becoming a color guard judge…

Do you love the color guard activity?

  • Do you love attending shows? Learning the history?

  • Watching winterguard videos on online? Are you excited to see the new ideas groups will try each year?

  • Do you like the idea of giving back and supporting performers? Are you drawn to service?

If your answer is YES to these questions, you should consider becoming a winter guard judge.

We are always looking for new judges – individuals with experience as performers, instructors, designers, or choreographers who want to stay involved and help the next generation grow.

As the circuits grow and we have more guards and more contests, we need qualified judges to serve these groups. We especially seek people with recent teaching and design experience – staying current ensures the best possible feedback for performers and instructors.

Why are new judges needed?

  1. Contact the Circuit Chief Judge Fred Feeney. fbf@frslaw.com

  2. Have a Personal Conversation. Discuss your background, experience and interests to select a specific caption to focus on during training.

  3. Complete the Training Process.

    1. Participate in a training process that will include webinars and possibly a live seminar covering the basics of judging and the judging systems.

    2. Participate in trial judging at local contests based upon your availability and schedule.

    3. Receive feedback from experienced caption specialist judges.

    4. Participate in training webinars with working judges.

    5. Learn about the scoring process and numbers management principles.

  4. The path varies depending upon your experience, schedule, and progress – but this process will prepare you to serve as a circuit color guard judge. (also known as a “local judge”)
